Covering Turkey Hunting Ground

The way that a hunter covers his hunting grounds can often play a part in his success. Here are some suggestions for getting around in turkey hunting areas.

Ridges

When turkey hunting along hills and ridges, be careful not to get busted by on looking turkeys. A turkey can detect movement easier if you walk across the top of the ridges. If possible, try walking on the sides of ridges or hills and use the background as cover.

Fields

A turkey can see a long ways in an open field. This can often present problems when turkey hunting. It is best, whenever possible, to take advantage of any hedge rows, adjoining woods, or ditches to help hide you as you walk towards the setup areas.

Trails

Logging, farming, or other type trails often offer easy access to turkey hunting areas. However, they also provide the turkey with a better field of view. Use the trails to cover ground quickly if the turkey a long way off. Then during the last several hundred yards or so, slip inside the woods to prevent the turkey from spotting you.

Creeks

Many turkey hunting areas have creeks that run around or through the property. If the water is not too deep, these creeks can be excellent for moving from one area to another without being detected by the turkey.

Leaves

During the spring, the leaves will begin to thicken and provide good cover for moving through the woods. Instead of walking in wide open areas, use the leaves to improve concealment.

By using proper terrain as cover, you can reduce the chances of spooking or being busted by the turkeys.
