Improve Turkey Hunting With Better Setups

Turkey hunting results often depend on whether or not the hunter is setup in an area that the turkey is most likely to respond to. This means the hunter will have to find a good location.

So how does the hunter find the best area to setup? The key to answering this question can come from how the natural sequence of events occur between the gobbler and the hen.

In nature, the hen will call out to the gobbler to let the gobbler know of her location. The gobbler will call out to let the hen know of his location. Sometimes the hen calls first, and sometimes the gobbler will call first.

Assuming that both turkeys show interest, the turkeys will then head towards an area in which the turkeys will gather together. These are areas that have been used by both the gobbler and the hen in the past. The hunter knows these areas as strutting zones.

The gobbler will be looking to strut, the hen will be looking for the gobbler. The gobbler will strut and gobble while waiting for the hen to arrive. This is the normal chain of events that occur between the two turkeys.

Therefore, these strutting areas are the key to proper setups for the hunter. If the hunter can position himself in or around a strut zone, the result of the hunt will be improved. The job of the hunter then is to find these areas and be setup before the gobbler arrives.

The best way to find these strutting zones is to be familiar with the terrain. A strut zone is an open area that will allow the gobbler to be seen. This may be a field, a power line, a logging trail, or simply an open area in the woods.

By knowing the terrain, the hunter can decide the most likely strutting areas. The hunter can then setup in these areas and wait for the gobbler to arrive. This makes for a better setup and much improved success.
