Turkey Hunting And Camouflage

In the turkey hunting field, camouflage can often play a major role in whether or not the hunter is successful. It is important to take advantage of both gear and also nature to help with concealment. Here are some helpful tips…

Importance Of Camouflage

The wild turkey has excellent vision that is used for survival. The turkey is constantly moving its head while keeping a visual on the surroundings.

Anything that the turkey observes that appears unnatural or out of place will usually result in the turkey becoming alarmed and likely will leave the hunting area.

It is important for the hunter to use camouflage concealment methods to reduce the chances of being seen by the turkey.

Camouflage Clothing

The camouflage clothing that the hunter chooses to wear should be from a pattern similar to that of the back ground terrain of the area to be hunted.

The hunter needs to be completely concealed from head to toe. Special attention should be given to the face, neck, and hands.

Natural Camouflage

The hunter should also take advantage of the natural camouflage already available in nature. The use of wide trees to lean against helps to break up body outlines.

Leaves on undergrowth as well as low hanging limbs can provide extra cover in a setup area.

The hunter should avoid sitting in direct sunlight as this can draw unwanted attention. Instead try to sit in the shade to dull the appearance.

Sometimes it can also be beneficial to set up natural ground blinds using available fallen limbs, vines, or branches.

The camouflage aspect of turkey hunting should be a priority to avoid being seen by the turkey and to improve the odds of success.

It always amazes me just how much more adept the turkey is at seeing compared to elk or deer. With those animals camo is important but not nearly as so.

Proper camouflage clothing patterns such as woodland camouflage, smokey branch camo or a ghillie suit is important to blend in with the enviroment you are hunting in. With ground blinds, the hunter has a better chance of success.
