Turkey Hunting Ten Until Two

Turkey hunting at sunrise is often conditioned into hunters as being a good time to hunt. However, many gobblers will fly off the roost and meet up with already available hens. This often makes for tough turkey hunting.

On the other hand, many turkeys are taken between the hours of ten and two. Those gobblers that met up with the hens off the roost are now alone and often searching for a new hen.

The hunter that can locate these interested gobblers can often have a pretty good opportunity to call in a late morning or afternoon turkey.

Since the hens are usually nesting at this time, the hunter will normally not have to compete with other hens. This offers the hunter a chance at better results.

If the hunter is familiar with turkey movement, the hunter should know of several strutting areas on the property. These areas are excellent for midday hunting.

The hunter can setup in such areas and wait for a gobbler to arrive. Add a few decoys for a visual impact. Use clucks, purrs, and occasional soft yelps.

The hunter can also use running and gunning tactics to cover more ground. This tactic will often allow the hunter to locate a gobbler that is willing to respond more quickly.

If using run and gun, a good approach is to move in 100 or so yard sections. Stop and call for ten to twenty minutes and wait for a response.

Although there may be gobblers that will gobble throughout the day, sometimes the gobblers will only spit and drum as they make their way in.

Other gobblers will come in silently without making any sound at all. Try to listen for walking sounds as well as the normal sounds made by gobblers.

It is always a good idea to be patient for turkeys. This is even more true for hunting turkeys during the late morning or afternoon.

Turkey hunting from ten until two or later can be very effective for the hunter that is willing to spend time in the woods.
